Homemade Baby Wipes

Well, I am blogging one-handed as Baby Boy’s head is resting in the crook of my left elbow as he naps. He is 13 weeks old today. Last time I weighed him (several days ago) he was 17 pounds! Almost time for a new carseat. We just put him in a johnny jump up for the first time yesterday. He hasn’t really got jumping down yet, but he moves his feet and makes himself spin around.

My friend gave me a recipe for homemade baby wipes. They have been working great for us, and are cost-effective. It’s so easy. You just take a 3 qt. (#6) Rubbermaid container, and then mix 2 c. water, 2 tablespoons baby oil, and 2 tablespoons baby soap with a fork in the container. (I also put in a drop or two of tea tree oil for its antibacterial properties, and I’ve heard it keeps mold from growing in the wipes, too–I’ve never had a problem with mold). Then cut a roll of Bounty paper towels in half to make two short rolls. Put one in the Rubbermaid container, put on the lid, and turn it upside down. Let the roll soak up the solution for 15 minutes, then pull out the center cardboard core, and you have a roll of baby wipes that you can pull out from the center.

  1. I used homemade baby wipes with my first, a recipe very similiar to yours, and they worked great! When my second was born money was even tighter so I came up with something even cheaper…As a gift for my baby shower (during first pregnancy) I got a wipe warmer. I just filled it up with nicely folded cheapo washcloths (I got a pack of 36 for $4.99) and plain ol’ water. They stay nice and warm and are great for wiping up messy bottoms and even messy hands and faces….I use cloth diapers so they get thrown in the diaper pail and washed every other day when I wash the diapers. They’re very effective, yet cheap.

  2. Wow that’s a neat idea! But now that I have two baby’s it’s just so much easier to use store bought wipes, but that’s probably just laziness on my part…but I might try that when I have some time. I would probably have to compare prices to see just how much money it would save me. Right now we’re still using a jumbo box of wipes we bought a month and a half ago and it cost less than 10 dollars. Which I think is pretty good for two babies. I’d be interested to know how much your paper towels cost for a months supply for one baby. Question: How often does your little guy eat? I was so surprised that he is only 13 weeks and is 17 lbs.!
